The first step to a successful tile installation is proper surface preparation. Before getting started, review the Technical Data sheet. You’ll find detailed instructions and a helpful coverage chart. RedGard Waterproofing and Crack Prevention membrane is versatile. Install it with your choice of a roller and brush, a trowel or an airless sprayer. You can apply RedGard to concrete, cement backerboard, exterior grade plywood and exterior decks. It also bonds directly to metal and plastic drain assemblies. RedGard is tough enough to be used as a shower pan liner.
Before installing RedGard, make sure any exterior or wet areas have properly angled floors that slope to drains. All surfaces must be structurally sound, clean and dry. Any contaminants can prevent RedGard from bonding. Apply RedGard using a ¾ inch nap rough-textured synthetic roller and a paintbrush. Or, use a 3/16th-inch by one-quarter inch V-notch trowel. First, pre-coat the corners and the intersections where floors and walls meet. Spread RedGard six inches on each side of the intersection. Changes of plane or gaps more than 1/8th inch should be reinforced with 6-inch wide fiberglass mesh. Embed the mesh into the liquid and let the pre-coated seams dry. You’ll know RedGard is dry when it turns from pink to red. This typically takes 60- 90 minutes, but can take longer depending on humidity and jobsite conditions. Be sure to let RedGard dry fully between coats.
For general waterproofing, apply 2 coats of RedGard. Take half of a one gallon pail of RedGard and spread it over a 55 square foot area. Then, take the remaining half gallon and apply it as a second coat. Use two thicker coats to create a waterproof shower pan liner meeting IAPMO standards. Take half of a one gallon pail of RedGard and spread it over 40 square feet for the first coat. Then, take the remaining half gallon and apply it as a second coat. If using a roller, apply a continuous, even coat with overlapping strokes. If using a trowel, spread RedGard with the notched side of the trowel held at a 45 degree angle, then flatten the ridges. After the first coat has dried, you can apply the second waterproofing coat. Inspect the dry membrane and fill any voids or pinholes. Then, apply the second coat of RedGard at right angles to the first coat.
Just a single coat of RedGard can stop minor cracks from transmitting through a concrete subfloor to the tile and grout. Use the same application process with a paint roller, trowel or airless sprayer. Bridge gaps or pre-existing cracks with 6-inch fiberglass mesh tape during the pre-coating stage. For general crack isolation, apply one coat of RedGard at a rate of 100 square feet per gallon. Or, to meet the requirements of ANSI A118.12, apply two thicker coats of RedGard. Take half of a one gallon pail of RedGard and spread it over 25 square feet for the first coat. Then, take the remaining half gallon and apply it as a second coat. Once RedGard has cured, you’re ready to set your tile or stone. If you won’t be tiling right away, the membrane must be protected from damage caused by contaminants, punctures and weather.
